A killer who claims doctors were wrong to send him to Carstairs for stabbing a mum to death has returned to the appeal court.
Alexander Reid, 61, wants to be sent to prison – so he can apply for parole. Reid has been a patient in the State Hospital since 1967 after being convicted of the culpable homicide of Angela McCabe, 22, of Bishopbriggs, who he killed while her four-week-old baby slept in the room upstairs.
Reid has failed in a number of attempts to swap his hospital bed for a cell but he now hopes judges at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh will grant his plea.
Illiterate Reid performed badly in intelligence tests in 1967. His low IQ was an important factor in ordering him to hospital.
After taking classes Reid's IQ scores improved – providing a more accurate guide to his intelligence, his legal team claim.
