Normal lessons went to pot for Bearsden pupils when top TV chef James Martin paid them a visit.

The Saturday Kitchen presenter was happy to pass on a few culinary tips to pupils of Killermont Primary who, it’s clear, have a healthy outlook.

James gave the youngsters a cookery demonstration after pupil Demelza Hart, 7, won a nationwide healthy eating competition.

Demelza fought off competition from more than 4000 entries to win the Food Standards Agency Scotland and Consumer Focus Scotland calendar compeher poster showing the importance of a balanced diet. James praised the talented primary three girl, saying: “There were over 4000 entries, that says it all and it’s a great advert for nutrition and eating ‘five a day’.”

The chef also backed the drive to promote healthy eating and food hygiene, adding: “It’s so important to educate kids on food and use the enthusiasm they have.”

Demelza was given a framed copy of her poster, which along with 11 runners-up, features in the calendar. The pupil also earned her school £1000 for equipment and £300 for herself.

The youngster aims to stay healthy … she revealed she has put her winnings towards buying a trampoline for her garden!
