PEOPLE in a jobs blackspot must benefit from the expansion of the Fort Shopping Centre in the east of Glasgow, according to the local MSP.

Paul Martin, Provan Labour MSP, said young people, in particular from the east end of the city must get a fair share of the 500 new jobs to be created at the centre, beside the M8 at Easterhouse.

Mr Martin led a debate in the Scottish Parliament last night on the issue and has contacted bosses of the biggest stores involved in the expansion plans.

The fort is undergoing a £45m expansion plan with 500 new jobs in the shops, and restaurants.

Marks & Spencer will be one of the biggest retailers at the centre when it is complete

Mr Martin has already written to the chief executive of M & S, Marc Bolland to persuade him that local young people should be given opportunities on their doorstep.

The MSP has also met with Phil Goodman the Glasgow Fort manager to discuss how they can help bring down high unemployment levels in the area.

Mr Martin said: "The success of the Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre has been great for the area I represent.

"Plans to expand the development are very welcome and we now have some of the UK's biggest retailers on our doorstep.

"I want to up the pressure on retail bosses to ensure that local residents feel the benefit of the new investment.

"Securing this debate in Holyrood was important to me, as I want employers, social enterprises and Jobs & Business Glasgow to work together to make sure that local jobseekers don't miss out".
