BUSINESS chiefs are being urged to splash out and launch modern apprenticeship schemes to help youngsters into work.
The call, by Scotland's Youth Employment Minister Angela Constance, came in a visit to Barrhead Travel, which unveiled its plans to hire 50 recruits as part of a £700,000 training scheme investment.
At the firm's HQ in Glasgow's Oswald Street, she described the apprenticeship scheme by Scotland's largest independent travel group as "a leading example for other businesses" and added "I hope that the commitment shown by the company will encourage others to support our young people".
Sharon Munro, chief executive of Barrhead Travel, said: "We feel it is our role to help develop and support the country's young workforce."
Young recruits get on-job coaching, training and travel allowances as well as staff benefits and the chance to obtain an industry recognised NVQ qualification Successful trainees are then offered a job.
