Councillors approved the area's £672m budget, plus a £251m capital investment package which will see new schools and care homes built.

As reported in the Evening Times, lollipop men and woman and public toilet attendants are among those whose jobs have been targeted in the savings package.

Council Leader Eddie McAvoy said: "Thanks to prudent management, we can continue to build on our long-term investments to improve the lives of young and old alike."

Over in North Lanarkshire, the council agreed a budget of £719m.

Last year they revealed a package to save £73m by 2016 and no new cuts were announced this year.

Meanwhile, East Renfrewshire Council approved a budget of £213m for 2014/15, as well as a £60m investment package.

And councillors in Renfrewshire agreed a £370.5m services programme and a two-year £119.6m capital plan for 2014/15.
