John launches £1m city panto at his old school

Flamboyant star of stage and screen John Barrowman has returned to his native Glasgow to launch the UK’s biggest panto.

John, 43, who lived in Mount Vernon in the East End until he left for America aged 9, joined kids from his old school, Mount Vernon Primary to launch Aladdin which he will star in at the city’s Clyde Auditorium this Christmas.

And he revealed it was pantomimes which first got him into performing. John said: “It was Babes in the Wood I think I saw at the King’s. I remember it fondly. That would have been my first theatrical experience.” With production costs of £1 million the hi-tech show will be the biggest panto in the UK this Christmas, as well as the first to play at the 3000-seat Clydeside venue. And it will offer a new take on the traditional show -- as parts will be in 3D. Audience members, who will be handed special glasses, will duck to avoid flying rocks, bats, and even spiders. And they will even be able to reach out and rub the genie’s magic lamp. Producers also promise John will fly above the heads of the audience -- without wires.
