A BROTHER and sister killed in a fire attack on their home were laid to rest today.

The funeral of Thomas Sharkey, 21, and his younger sister Bridget, eight, was held in their home town of Helensburgh.

Thomas died in the fire at the family's flat in the town's Scott Court in the early hours of Sunday July 24.

Bridget died on the way to hospital.

Six days later their father, Thomas Sharkey Snr, 55, died in hospital of pneumonia caused by smoke inhalation.

Mr Sharkey's wife, Angela, 46, was critically injured in the fire and remained in hospital before learning of her family's deaths on August 4.

She has since spoken of her anguish at losing her family.

Bridget was a pupil at St Joseph's primary school in Helensburgh.

Head teacher Ann Chalmers described her as "a beautiful child, very talented, an excellent all-rounder and enthusiastic pupil".

A talented golfer, Thomas Jr won a golf scholarship to America after leaving Our Lady and St Patrick's High in Dumbarton in 2008.

A Requiem Mass for the pair was led by Father Peter Lennon at St Joseph's Church in Helensburgh before a private burial at Helensburgh Cemetery.

Police said the Sharkey family has asked "that their privacy be respected at this very sad time."

Eulogies were read for the pair by Ms Chalmers and one of Thomas's friends.
