ANGELINA Jolie has made her first red carpet appearance since undergoing a double mastectomy.

The film star was in London last night to support Brad Pitt at the premiere of World War Z – the film in which Glasgow has a starring role.

Jolie, who wore a floor-length black dress, smiled as she spoke to fans outside the Leicester Square cinema where the zombie blockbuster was being screened.

She revealed last month how she opted to have a double mastectomy after finding out she carried a faulty gene which made her likelihood of developing breast cancer 87%. The operation cut that risk to just 5%.

Jolie's mother Marcheline Bertrand died of ovarian cancer, which was also associated with the gene. Jolie's aunt, Debbie Martin, died last week after battling breast cancer.

Talking to reporters on the red carpet, she said: "I feel great and I am very, very grateful for all the support.

"I am happy that my experience has opened a discussion about women's health."

Speaking about World War Z, which brought her to Scotland with Pitt when he was filming in Glasgow, she added: "I think this is a fun film – I am excited for Brad."

The streets of Glasgow – including George Square – are easily recognisable in the film.

The cast and crew took over the city in 2011 for 17 days, closing 14 streets as Glasgow was transformed to resemble Philadelphia.

More than 400 local people also signed up to play extras in some of the crowd scenes in the thriller.

Speaking outside the cinema in London yesterday Pitt, who starred in the film, thanked crowds for their response.

He said: "We filmed most of it here, in the UK. We relied so heavily on the crowds and they were great."

Pitt said of his fiancee: "She is doing great. It is business as usual. It is the next stage for us."

World War Z will be shown at the Grosvenor Cinema in Ashton Lane, Glasgow, on June 19 before its release on June 21.
