A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy with cerebral palsy is to fly to the US for ground-breaking treatment after a mammoth fundraising effort.

Joshua Granger's mum, Ashley, led a campaign to raise £50,000 for her son's life-changing surgery.

And with less than £10,000 until they reach their total -and just two months until the operation - the final push is under way.

Joshua, who has to wear splints to help him walk, will have his operation on November 19.

The St Marnock's Primary pupil also gets painful injections in his legs every three months.

His family believe he could be given a new lease of life through a surgery carried out at St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri.

The Evening Times highlighted the Pollok family's campaign and Joshua's mum has since been overwhelmed by offers and support from people.

Ashley, 26, said: "With the latest sponsor money, we have raised more than £40,000. It's just nine weeks until Joshua has the operation and the weeks are flying in.

"Everything has become a reality and we just can't believe it's all happened so quickly."

Pupil support assistant Ashley told how supportive friends had been to the family.

She added: "And the help and support we have received from those unknown to us in has been amazing.

"We have all met new friends along the way."

It is hoped the operation may even let Joshua fulfil his dream of playing football. He said: "I usually have to just watch from the sides, but I hope this operation means that I can play too."

Joshua was born 10 weeks prematurely, weighing only 3lbs 6oz and he spent weeks in hospital.

When Ashley eventually took her son home, she noticed he was not doing things a baby should.

Doctors later diagnosed Joshua with cerebral palsy.

Ashley said: "Since then, Joshua has had to learn to use a walking frame.

"It has been hard work, and we know there is a lot more ahead but it will be worth it."

Ashley and her partner, Craig Greenwood, and their one-year-old daughter Rebbekah will join Joshua on the trip to America.

The operation, performed by world renowned Dr Park, will see him perform a procedure to lengthen Joshua's calves. The family will spend around a month in America for Joshua's procedure and follow-ups.
