ANDY Murray faced unexpected gatecrashers after taking his place in the US Open final, when his mother Judy, Sir Sean Connery and Sir Alex Ferguson burst into his press conference in New York.

The Scot, who tonight plays in his fifth Grand Slam final, promptly told his mother "you smell of wine", before she blamed Sir Alex for making her drink it.

The trio burst in just as the 25-year-old was explaining his feelings at one of the stranger victories of his career against Tomas Berdych in the last four of the competition.

Play had been halted at Flushing Meadows by torrential rain and a howling gale.

Sir Sean said: "Excuse me for interrupting, but I just wanted to make a point. Where's Alex? I don't know where your mother is. Ah, there she is."

Murray asked the actor if he was going to be around for the final, but Connery did not hear him and instead shouted: "Come on, Judy, Judy, Judy, Judy."

In between bursts of laughter, Murray said to his mum: "You smell of wine."

She then nodded at Sir Alex and replied: "He made me have wine. He's just been telling me that Scotland invented the world."

Sir Alex then said: "Been coming here the last three years to New York, and I explained how Scotland invented the world; today we invented the wind."

While Sir Sean shouted: "Today they conquered the world!"

As a bemused Murray looked on, Sir Alex added: "Very good. Fantastic. Continue your interview - you know I don't talk to journalists."

Judy Murray later described herself on Twitter as "shaken and stirred".

As the press conference resumed, Murray – who defeated Czech Tomas Berdych by three sets to one to secure his place in tonight's final – said: "It's great. It's obviously nice to have their support. Hopefully, they will be back for the final as well."

Of the conditions during his match the Scot said: "The ball was moving, stopping, there were chairs flying.

"They were some of the hardest conditions I've ever played in and I come from Scotland, so that's saying something."

Later, as he prepared for the final against Novak Djokovic, Murray enjoyed a relaxing "training session" with Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey.

As Scotland again waits with bated breath to see if he can finally do it, locals in his home town of Dunblane will enjoy extended pub opening hours as they watch the match.

Alan Duncan, landlord of the Dunblane Hotel, has had his opening hours extended to 1am.

He said: "We'll be showing the final as always, but celebrations will depend on whether he wins or not.

"I think the whole town will be in a celebratory mood if he wins tonight. He's a credit to his community, he conducts himself very well and from speaking to the patrons of the bar, they're all extremely proud of him and wish him all the best."
