FANS of junior football team St Roch's were praised for donating hundreds of items to a city food bank.

Glasgow's Needy, which was set up by Andrew and Darren Carnegie last year, will benefit from the food drive.

Since it was launched, the pair have fed around 1500 hungry people through their food bank.

Club bosses were "overwhelmed" by donations from St Roch's supporters.

Team official Jim Friel said: "We as a club were doing our bit for Glasgow's Needy by running a foodbank on Saturday. We were left overwhelmed by the generous donations provided by visiting Glenafton supporters.

"What they did in bringing sacks and carrier bags full of foodstuffs all the way from Ayrshire was nothing short of sensational.

"And they followed this up by contributing generously to a collection for the Marie Curie Hospice.

"Junior fans causing trouble at games tends to make the headlines so it's only right for the wonderful gestures from the Glenafton supporters to be given proper acclaim."

The Evening Times' Food for Thought campaign is calling for a more co-ordinated approach of city food banks.
