A war of words has broken out between Labour and the Tories on knife crime.
According to the Conservatives, thugs who carry knives should be locked up for at least two years.
Glasgow MSP, Bill Aitken, has outlined his party’s stance which would send offenders to jail for four times longer than an alternative plan by Labour.
Labour has already launched a major campaign calling for six-month mandatory jail sentences. Now the Tories have tabled their own amendment, which presumes two years jail for possession of a knife.
Mr Aitken, Tory justice spokesman, said: “Labour’s plans for a six-month tariff for carrying a knife are woefully inadequate.”
However, Richard Baker, Labour justice spokesman, said: “The Tories are only calling for a presumption rather than a mandatory minimum.”
