LABOUR leader Ed Miliband today quit after a disastrous night saw the SNP march through the party's strongholds north of the Border.
Scottish Labour's vote dramatically collapsed and just hours after they lost 40 seats to the SNP, Miliband resigned.
Sweeping losses for Labour saw David Cameron close to an overall majority.
Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy and shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander were among the big-name casualties to lose their seats on the night.
Miliband addressed campaigners at party headquarters in London shortly after noon today.
He said: "I am tendering my resignation with effect from this afternoon's VE Day celebrations."
