Labour takes control of council

LABOUR has taken majority control of South Lanarkshire Council after winning the Rutherglen South by-election.

Gerard Killen was announced as the new councillor last night, taking the ward from the SNP. The 26-year-old lives in Rutherglen and runs a construction firm.

The SNP was beaten into third and the Liberal Democrats came second.

Councillor Killen said: "It is a fantastic honour to represent the Rutherglen community and I look forward to repaying the trust the people have put in me."
