A COMMUNITY group is celebrating a hard-fought victory after a local authority entered into discussions to hand over a piece of land for the benefit of local people.

Linwood Community Development Trust has, for four years, campaigned for better community facilities.

And Renfrewshire Council has now started discussions with the trust over a 2.4 hectare area of land in the town to be transferred under its Asset Transfer policy.

The trust aims to build an all-weather football pitch with changing facilities and a community wellbeing centre.

Kirsty Flannigan, a board member at the trust, said: "We are so glad that we decided to persevere with our campaign as our voices were finally heard last year by the new leader of Renfrewshire Council and one of our local councillors, who agreed to support us 100% with our aspirations for Linwood.

"This support has now led to the council agreeing this week to work with us through their Asset Transfer policy, so we can obtain a 2.4 hectare piece of land, which is an amazing achievement for our group."

Regeneration of the town in recent years has included the £24m ON-X sports facility and a new Tesco store, which is currently being constructed.
