Former Celtic footballer John Kennedy and charities are being lined up for a bumper pay day.

They are expected to share hundreds of thousands of pounds when the Old Firm club plays Manchester United in a Battle of the Legends match at Parkhead.

Cash from ticket sales for the clash next month is to be split between the Celtic Charity Fund and the team's former defender, who was forced to retire from the game after damaging a knee when playing for Scotland against Romania at Hampden Park.

John, who is now a Celtic scout, was to have had a testimonial several weeks ago but the match had to be cancelled.

A Celtic spokeswoman said today: "The beneficiaries of the Celtic Legends vs Manchester Utd Legends will be the Celtic Charity Fund and John Kennedy.

"The Celtic Charity Fund supports many causes all over the world including CHAS, Oxfam, Mary's Meals and the Queensland Flood Appeal plus many more."

Hundreds of thousands of pounds are likely to be banked when fans from both sides of the border flock to Glasgow's East End.

Celtic greats such as Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Lubo Moravcik plus team manager Neil Lennon and coaches Johan Mjallby and Alan Thompson will take to the pitch, while the United line-up will include Teddy Sheringham, Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Larsson said: "It will be a tremendous pleasure to return to Celtic Park to play in this match in front of the best fans in the world."

Tickets for the game at Parkhead on August 9 can be bought now, at £10 adults and £5 concession, by calling 0871 226 1888 or visiting the Celtic Ticket Office or club stores.
