GLASGOW'S venues are "world class" - according to the people who live here.

One year on from the launch of the People Make Glasgow brand, research shows 90% of city residents would recommend Glasgow as a great place for events.

And 87% described the city's venues - such as the SSE Hydro and the Emirates Arena - as world class.

Glasgow's marketing bosses commissioned a survey of the city's people as part of the two-year Let's Celebrate initiative.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, chairman of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "These survey results demonstrate both the success of the Let's Celebrate campaign in the past year and the appeal of Glasgow's packed events programme.

"Glasgow enjoys an enviable reputation for winning and delivering major events on a global scale and over the next 12 months we can look forward to an extraordinary schedule of the most exciting events the city has ever seen, from the World Street Dance Championships and the MTV European Music Awards to the Turner Prize.

"In addition, new infrastructure such as the SSE Hydro and the Emirates Arena are bringing a wealth of new international events and acts to the city and, with less than 30 days to go, the Commonwealth Games and its associated cultural programme are special highlights we can all look forward to."

Let's Celebrate aims to showcase Glasgow's diver-se, year-round, major events programme and urge people to get involved.

Some 92% of those surveyed said they would have no hesitation in recommending Glasgow as a leading destination for events with 91% also agreeing that Glasgow offers a wide range of events.

And 79% agreed the variety of things to do in the city has increased notably in recent years - citing everything from the Commonwealth Games to the West End Festival.

More than 750 people took part in the survey. Of those, 84% said they had attended an event in the past six months - with the most popular activity being going to a music concert.

In the past six months, Glasgow has welcomed global stars such as Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Gary Barlow, Miley Cyrus, Prince, Michael Buble and The Eagles.

Other popular events included going to the theatre (34%), an exhibition (29%), a football match (23%) a comedy gig (17%) and a festival (9%).

When respondents were asked if there was anything they have not done but would like to try, responses included taking Glasgow's sightseeing bus tour, trying out the cycling track at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and joining a 'ghost walk' at the city's Necropolis.

Mr Matheson added: "Let's Celebrate is about ensuring the people of Glasgow and the many visitors to our city are aware of the breadth of great events taking place.

"It's about celebrating the rich heritage, identity and diversity of Glasgow's major events programme."

Glasgow attracts 2.3million tourists annually who inject £494million into the local economy.

Many travel from across the UK and overseas to attend major events such as Glasgow International Comedy Festival, Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, Merchant City Festival and Piping Live!

Both Celtic Connections and Glasgow Film Festival reported a rise in visitor numbers this year, which bosses say means Let's Celebrate is having an impact.

The campaign involves TV, radio, print, cinema and outdoor advertising across west central Scotland, and the website www.people makeglasgow.com/whatson

To celebrate the success of the campaign, 1000 commuters were this morning given cupcakes as a thank you for supporting the city.

Mr Matheson said: "This is the year of Glasgow and it's already proving to be one of the most exciting in our history.

"It's no coincidence that the people of Glasgow are at the heart of our brand."
