A SENIOR detective has slammed a "calculated" sex attacker who raped five women.

Jonathon Mallon, 32, is today beginning a life sentence after raping five women and sexually abusing a sixth.

He must spend at least 10 years behind bars before being able to apply for parole.

As reported in late editions of the Evening Times, Mallon was convicted of carrying out a campaign of terror against the women over a 14-year period.

Mallon, from Glasgow, raped one of his victims in a toilet at the Odeon Cinema in Renfield Street and another in a changing cubicle at Scotstoun swimming pool.

He was convicted of the rapes, sexual abuse and domestic abuse after a lengthy trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

Detective Inspector Mark McGowan, who led the investigation, said it was a "protracted inquiry".

He also praised the victim who first contacted officers about Mallon's crimes.

He said: "From there, our inquiries led us to the remaining victims, all of whom had been living with the constant nightmares of their attacks at the hands of Jonathon Mallon.

"He was a calculated individual who preyed on the vulnerability of his victims.

"Firstly luring them into a relationship, and then carrying out horrific acts on each of them.

"The verdict represents hope to every victim out there, that all efforts will be undertaken to bring sexual predators such as Jonathan Mallon to justice."

Judge Bill Dunlop QC told Mallon: "You may never be released and the prospects are that you will be in custody for a very long time indeed."

Mallon met two of his victims at church, another he chatted up on a bus and the others he met at parties.

He was described by one of his former girlfriends as a Jekyll and Hyde character.

His victims are now aged 21, 25, 26, 31, 31, and his sex abuse victim is 27.

Mallon denied all the allegations against him and claimed any sex was consensual.
