Airline chiefs are to investigate the possibility of more new routes out of the westcoast hub, and that could include flights to London City Airport.

The bustling airport is build on former docklands in the London borough of Newham. British Airways currently operates a daily BA Flier service between Glasgow and the London hub but there's thought to be scope for a rival operation.

And today Dublin-based airline chiefs at CityJet triggered speculation that they could launch a rival service and even use London City as a connecting hub to take Scots to a number of European financial centres as well as tourist hotspots in France and Jersey.

The possibility of extra flights was revealed as CityJet launched its first ever flight out of Glasgow when it flew passengers to Cardiff. This morning's maiden flight was the start of a daily service by the airline between Scotland's west coast and the Welsh capital after CityJet chiefs stepped in to save the route.

CityJet's chief executive, Christine Ourmieres, said: "Even though we are starting off with the route to Cardiff, I will always be open to considering other opportunities from Glasgow and the airline will monitor passenger demand and needs."

Business development manager at Glasgow Airport, Paul White, said: "We wish CityJet every success and look forward to working with the airline to ensure its success and hopefully expand its presence at Glasgow Airport."
