LORD Smith of Kelvin, who headed the Commonwealth Games, has been appointed the new chairman of the biggest regeneration project in Britain.

Next month, he will take the reins at Clyde Gateway and has vowed to use his experience at the Games to drive forward the regeneration of the East End.

Clyde Gateway was set up in December 2007 as a 20 year project to attract businesses, homes and jobs to a 2000 acre, rundown part of the city.

It has since attracted investment of more than £150million with a further £60m in the pipeline.
