Colin and Chris Weir, from Largs, who won more than £161million in the EuroMillions lottery last July, making them as rich as the Beckhams, are number 462 on a list.

The guide shows Scotland's richest got even richer over the past year, adding up to a record number of billionaires which include a Glasgow businessman who left school at 16.

Jim McColl, 61, who sold his Clyde Union Pumps business in Cathcart, Glasgow, last year for £750m has been revealed as one of Scotland's five billionaires.

McColl also has a £960m stake in East Kilbride-based Clyde Blowers and his wealth is valued at £1billion – despite leaving Rutherglen Academy at 16.

Mahdi al-Tajir, head of Highland Spring mineral water, was named as Scotland's richest person, worth £1.6bn.

He is joined at the top of the list by the Grant and Gordon whisky family, worth £1.4bn.

There are more Scots among Britain's wealthiest people than ever before, with 74 joining the ranks in the 2012 list, compared with 70 the previous year.

New entries include Aberdeen internet tycoon Pete Cashmore, 26, who founded the Mashable blog.

Harry Potter writer Joanne Rowling is the ninth richest person in Scotland, with a bank balance of £560m.

The figures were released in the annual Rich List from The Sunday Times.
