POLICE have arrested a man who allegedly broke into a string of vehicles in a multi-storey car park.

The 32-year-old was nicked by cops investigating a spate of alleged car crimes in Glasgow city centre.

He was arrested in connection with five alleged car break-ins, as part of nationwide crackdown Operation Quarterlight.

Police confirmed he was arrested in the early hours of Monday in connection with a range of offences, including opening a lockfast place.

He was due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

More than 20 specially deployed officers are taking part in the operation, which is specifically targeting serial offenders across Scotland.

Inspector Gavin Smith, who is based in the city centre, said: "This shows the value of the added focus of Operation Quarterlight in combating vehicle crime."

As revealed by the Evening Times, police have arrested more than 100 suspected crooks during the car crime blitz.

More than 60 people have been arrested in connection with 253 alleged vehicle crimes.

Another 39 people have been arrested during a series of dawn swoops.

We previously told how a couple were arrested in connection with nine alleged car break-ins in a matter of hours.

The man and his girlfriend were nabbed by officers investigating more than a dozen car crimes on the South Side of the city.

Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Thomson said: "Our sustained activity as part of Operation Quarterlight is already yielding encouraging and positive results.

"I would like to reassure the public that those involved in this activity will be continually targeted by officers.

"Those responsible will be arrested and held to account."

More than 70 vehicles have been stolen each week in Scotland since November, and during the same period 230 broken into.
