A MAN was rescued from a flat fire after smoke alarms alerted neighbouring homes.

Firefighters were called out to the four-storey tenement in Mill Street, Rutherglen, shortly after 12.30am today.

Two appliances from Polmadie were at the scene within five minutes and joined by a third from Castlemilk.

Watch Manager John O'Brien, incident commander, said: "The fire was in a second floor flat and we immediately committed teams to tackle it and conduct a search for anyone inside.

"They removed a man from the property and brought the fire under control."

He said smoke alarms had triggered in properties in the block and the man was treated by paramedics at the scene for smoke inhalation and superficial burns before being taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

He added: "Emergency responders are clear early warning of fire is crucial and the presence of working smoke alarms often buys the time needed for firefighters to reach those in danger."
