Many 'appy' returns for city museum

TOURISTS can now visit Glasgow's favourite museum...

without leaving the house.

A new mobile phone 'app' offers a guided tour of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, featuring highlights including the famous Salvador Dali painting Christ of St John of the Cross.

The app, for iPhones, contains a two-hour tour with sound and pictures.

It costs £3.99, though a free 'lite' version is also available.

The app has been created by Glasgow-based Guide-Me Tours and aims to help museums generate income.

The firm's Clare McLeod, 49, said: "Visitors get the opportunity to take the whole tour, as and when they want, and they'll have it forever and it's updated regularly.

"Or, if you are in another part of the world, you can see around the museum without having to visit – and the museum can still make money."

The cash is split between Guide Me Tours and Kelvingrove, and there are also plans to translate the app into other languages.

Claire is in talks with galleries in Manchester and Birmingham about similar apps and wants to do versions for castles and stately homes.

The app is for sale on iTunes and an Android version will follow.
