A CHURCH run youth project in one of Glasgow's most deprived area has been axed.

All services run by The Greater Maryhill Outreach Project stopped on April 20 and the charity is in the process of being completely wound down.

The project was based in the hall of Ruchill and Kelvinside Parish Church, which was also a partner organisation.

Projects included a tearoom and Buzz Club, run by young people, which organised activities for primary school aged children.

A statement from the board said elders had expressed "serious doubt" about the church's "current capacity" to continue the project.

It follows the departure of a number of board members and staff.

Crisis talks were held by the board to seek the view of church elders about the future of the project.

A statement on the project's website said: "The elders expressed clear and continuing support for the activities of GMOP but expressed serious doubts about the church's current capacity to support renewal of the organization and its partnership with the project.

"In the light of this, the Board met on 10th April and decided, with much regret, that GMOP should be dissolved and that none of its activities could or should resume after the Easter holidays.

"Over the next two or three months, the Board will continue to work with staff and volunteers - and with the church - throughout the process of winding up the charity properly."

However Board members and the church elders expressed hope that some activities and services might be resumed in the future.
