Sleet and snow fell over hilly areas as Britain continued shivering in unseasonably cold weather.
The highest parts of the Pennines and Scotland were affected by a mixture of sleet and snow after snow fell on hills in north Wales, Dartmoor and Exmoor on Tuesday night.
Forecaster Gemma Plumb said unsettled conditions could persist into next week. "On Saturday there is a potential to get persistent rain across northern parts of the UK," she said.
Snow in May is rare but not unknown. May 1979 saw four consecutive days of snowfall.
