RETAILERS in the East End of Glasgow are gearing up for a multi- million pound spending spree in the lead-up to Christmas.

Glasgow Fort is to launch midnight shopping for seven nights, and mall bosses are predicting festive bargain hunters will spend £3million in just 14 hours.

They reckon that's how much will be spent in total when shopping is extended by two hours every day from Monday until Sunday, December 23.

The Fort was the first mall in Scotland to introduce midnight shopping in the run-up to Christmas and its 85 retailers hope for another year of bumper festivities at the tills.

More than 1800 people will be working in the mall when the countdown to Christmas begins next week.

Fort manager Phil Goodman said: "We pioneered midnight opening seven years ago. It is a big event and has proved very popular.

"It gives people the flexibility of knowing there is no rush, and they can choose their Christmas presents carefully."
