The pilot service has been developed by Macmillan Cancer Support, with support from the RBS Group.

It will provide free, independent financial guidance and support to help people with cancer make good money choices for the future.

Neal Southwick, financial support programme lead at Macmillan, said: "Living with cancer can be the toughest fight of people's life, and to make it worse 43% of people living with cancer see a significant change in their money situation and so would benefit from financial guidance.".

Macmillan's staff will offer support and guidance to people affected by cancer on a range of decisions, from financial planning, to help with options around mortgages, insurance and pensions.

The service will complement Macmillan's existing benefits advice services which help people affected by cancer maximise their income through claiming the correct benefits or through the Macmillan grant scheme.

Simon Watson, head of Community Affairs at RBS said: "The RBS Group is a long term supporter of both the free money advice sector and Macmillan.

"In addition to piloting a tailored money guidance service, we hope that this partnership will raise greater awareness of the importance of planning financially for the future."

The pilot will last for 12 months and Macmillan and RBS hope to roll out the service in 2012.

Currently 6700 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year in the Glasgow area .
