The 2013 Monte Carlo Classic Rally is to return to its 'spiritual home' of Glasgow.

Organisers are predicting the start event at the People's Palace will attract the largest UK crowd in the event's history when it returns on Saturday, January 26.

For the 2013 race to the sun, Glasgow will join Barcelona, Reims and Copenhagen as start cities.

More than 9000 spectators saw the centenary race set off from Blythswood Square in 2011 – an event which generated £1 million for the city economy and garnered major global media attention.

Due to the popularity of the 2011 event, organizers have this year secured the larger venue of the People's Palace on Glasgow Green to accommodate the anticipated increased number of car-mad spectators.

New for this year, there will also be a public display in Buchanan Street of the 50 classic cars taking part in the race on the morning ahead of the main event.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "As a city famous for hosting the start of the rally in the 1950s and 60s, I'm delighted that it will once again return to its 'spiritual home' in 2013."
