TEMPORARY car parking spaces at the new South Glasgow Hospital must be put in place as a matter of priority the health secretary has said.

Shona Robison was asked in the Scottish Parliament by conservative MSP Annabel Goldie what it plans to do about the "inadequate" public transport and car parking provision.

Ms Goldie said the site was a beacon for health care but with 10,000 staff and "unquantifiable "amount of visitors there are serious concerns.

She said: "Frankly, all that the Scottish Government has offered us is rosy procrastination. Why has it allowed the crisis to develop and what is it doing about it now?"

Ms Robison said as well as the 2500 spaces when the hospital opens there will be another car park in 2016 offering another 1000 spaces.

She said car share, park and ride and public transport were alternative options.

Ms Robison said: "A lot of work has gone on between NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Glasgow City Council. The application for the 600 temporary spaces is with the city council, and we hope that the council will expedite the application so that that parking can be put in place.

"I understand the feelings of staff. We have been urging NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to enhance its communication with staff about the options, but we need to ensure that those temporary car parking spaces are put in place urgently, and I urge the council to get on and do that."
