POPE Francis has appointed a new Bishop for the Motherwell diocese.
Bishop Joseph Toal, currently Bishop of Argyle and the Isles, will take up the post following the resignation of Bishop Joseph Devine.
The bishopric has been vacant since May 31 last year.
Bishop Toal, who is from Roy Bridge in the Highlands, said: "Over the past 11 months, I have come to know the Diocese of Motherwell and appreciate the warmth and generosity of the clergy and laity.
"While I am sad to be leaving Argyll and the Isles, I know the deep faith of the people there will sustain them as they await a new Bishop and I ask them to pray for me."
