A Glasgow MP has hit out at government plans to cut housing benefit to tenants in the private rented sector after a report showed it will affect thousands in the city.

Anas Sarwar, Glasgow Central Labour MSP, said the proposals will see people pushed into debt and housing arrears and ultimately left homeless.

A report by housing group Crisis, into the plans said 8110 households in Glasgow would be directly affected.

Mr Sarwar said his constituency has a high number of people living in private rented accommodation, and would be badly affected by the plan.

He said: “Despite all the talk of fairness, the Conservatives are still happy to see people thrown out of their homes.

“The Chancellor and Work and Pensions Secretary should stop and give a moment’s thought to the social cost of homelessness across the UK.”
