SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has been urged to get a move on with its plans to build a store in East Kilbride.

Tesco plans to build a branch in the South Lanarkshire town in a partnership with the garden centre chain Dobbies.

A previous planning application lodged with South Lanarkshire for a Tesco, Dobbies, hotel, restaurants and a petrol station was originally approved in 2010.

Site agents JHAG Ltd have since lodged a proposal of application notice which will be followed by a revised planning application to be considered at a future meeting of the council's planning committee.

It is understood the new application will include plans for a single shared entrance to a joint Tesco/Dobbies store.

Michael McCann, the MP for East Kilbride, has welcomed the news that plans are still going ahead for the site at Redwood Drive, but he has called on Tesco to move fast to bring the expected 400 new jobs to the town.

East Kilbride has suffered a series of recent jobs blows with firms such as Coca Cola, Rolls Royce, the Jeyes Group and WR Refrigeration announcing jobs cuts.

Mr McCann said: "I have to confess to being disappointed that Tesco's timetable doesn't involve an immediate construction plan, particularly when you consider the battle royal that took place to have the site approved in the first place. We need the investment, we need the jobs and we need Tesco to get on with it."

A Tesco spokesman said: "We're committed to bringing a Tesco and Dobbies to Redwood Drive and have lodged a proposal of application notice with the council."

Tesco has vowed to carry out a public consultation next month to ensure the community has a say on the plans.
