PEOPLE in the east end will benefit from a new Marks & Spence store local politicians have said.

Margaret Curran, Glasgow East Labour MP, and Paul Martin, Provan Labour MSP, met with bosses of the company to seek assurances local people would get jobs.

M&S are opening the store at the Fort Shopping centre in Easterhouse later this year with 250 jobs expected.

Ms Curran said bosses gave the politicians a commitment to work with Jobs and Business Glasgow and JobCentre Plus to ensure local people get eh maximum possible benefit.

She said: ": "I have been campaigning for the M&S jobs to be kept local since they were announced and there has been significant support from the local community, so I am delighted with this commitment.

"Glasgow Fort has been a great resource for the East End for more than a decade and the addition of a retailer like M&S is sure to attract even more footfall. It's right that people in the east end who are looking for a job should benefit from this development on their own doorstep."

It is estimated 1700 of the centres 2500 workers are from the local area and Ms Curran said she will be looking to ensure that continues with the new store.
