MUHAMMAD tops the baby name trend for Glasgow in 2014 - and Mohammed also makes the top 10.

For Scotland as a whole, Jack was the most popular name for baby boys while Emily was the favourite girls' name.

But in Glasgow Muhammad came in first with 58 boys given that name.

Some 35 boy babies were called Mohammed, making it the 10th most popular name in the city.

Jack came in second while James and Lewis were joint third.

Girls' names in Glasgow echoed the national trend with 58 girls called Emily and 51 each of Emilia, Olivia and Sophie.

Across Scotland, Jack was the top name for boys for a seventh consecutive year, followed by James then Lewis.

Also in the top 10 for boys were Oliver, Logan, Daniel, Noah, Charlie, Lucas and Alexander.

Sophie was the second most popular girls' name, after being top for the previous nine years, while Olivia dropped from second to third place.

Other top girls' names were Isla, Jessica, Ava, Amelia, Lucy, Lily, Ella and Sophia.

Harry and Millie both dropped out of the top 10 rankings.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "It's such a big decision choosing a name for a new baby and it's always interesting to see the names proud parents all over Scotland have picked for their wee ones.

"There were 540 Jacks registered in Scotland in the first 11 months of this year and 539 babies called Emily.

"There were almost 27,000 boys and 26,000 girls registered in the first 11 months of 2014, but parents chose over 7,400 different first names for their children, and around 4,800 of these were unique."

The fastest climbers in the boys' Top Twenty were Noah, Max, and Adam.

There were two new entrants to the boys' Top Twenty: Aaron and Cameron; Alfie and Riley dropped out.

The fastest climbers in the girls' Top Twenty were Grace and Freya.

There were two new entrants to the girls' Top Twenty: Eilidh and Anna; Erin and Eva dropped out.

National Records of Scotland registered the births of almost 26,900 boys and over 25,600 girls in the first 11 months of 2014.
