A GLASGOW salvage business took off before it even opened its doors, thanks to a social media.

Richard McKay, of McKay Flooring, decided to open Love Salvage, in Govan, after years of providing reclaimed floors for customers.

Even before the business opened for trading it racked up 14,000 likes on Facebook in a week.

Mr McKay puts the success down to series of shots of interesting artefacts posted on the photograph sharing website Instagram.

He said: "The popularity of posting pictures of stock on Instagram and Facebook has been incredible.

"It has really surprised me, but there is definitely an appetite for vintage and reclaimed items.

"We have had interior designers contacting us saying they are looking for industrial chic and we have been able to help them with fittings and lights reclaimed from factories.

"There is some cracking stuff from old houses and factories.

"One of the oddest things is a massive Cold War map that is more than 10ft wide."

Mr McKay has spent most of this year turning his warehouse in Harmony Row into an Aladdin's Cave of antiques and furniture salvaged from across Scotland. The former St Anthony's League Hall building Harmony Row was the family firm's premises for more than 35 years.

The building will now house the Love Salvage showroom, as well as a cheerleading studio and specialist traditional coving and cornicing businesses run by two of Mr McKay's cousins.

The 40-year-old said: "I was born in Govan, my father was born in Govan and my grandfather had a fruit shop here – so there is a real connection with the place.

"It is great to see the old building coming back into use for three different businesses in one family.

"Love Salvage started because we provide a lot of reclaimed flooring. I started getting furniture and salvage items from house clearances and auctions.

"It snowballed from there. Now the showroom is full of reclaimed items, vintage stock and antiques."
