A NEW cap is being introduced on NHS-funded IVF treatment to drive down waiting times.

Couples will only be offered two cycles until "reasonable" waiting times are established across Scotland.

Some boards, including Ayrshire and Arran, offer three cycles, while Glasgow, Lothian and Fife already offer two.

Waiting times vary from three years and eight months in Grampian to virtually no wait in the Borders.

Some couples have been given a two-year waiting time for treatment at Glasgow's Royal Infimary.

Public Health Minister Michael Matheson described the waiting times variance as "unacceptable".

The government is spending £12million over three years to reduce waiting times and has set a new one-year waiting target for March 2015.

A report by the National Infertility Group suggests eligible patients may be offered up to three cycles where there is a reasonable expectation of a live birth but the cap should be set at two until "reasonable" waiting times are established across Scotland.

There are currently 467 people on the waiting list for IVF in Glasgow.
