THE new championships will result in a £2million BMX track being built in the north west of the city.

It will be the first world championship and Olympic standard track in Scotland and the second in the UK.

Knightswood Park has been selected as the preferred location following a feasibility study.

The track could be used by not only by clubs like the award winning Western Titans, which has a membership of 120 but also by schools and community groups.

City council leader Gordon Matheson said: "I am delighted we intend to bring an Olympic standard BMX track to Glasgow.

"BMX is a fast and entertaining sport and one which is gaining popularity in terms of participation and spectators and we want to take advantage of this by providing the facilities and opportunities to enjoy and sport and join in.

"The BMX track will be an excellent addition to our already world class sporting facilities and a great resource for professional and aspiring athletes, schools and community groups alike."
