MORE than 20 new homes will be built on the site of one of Motherwell's best-known landmarks.

Glencairn Tower had dominated the Lanarkshire town's skyline before it was demolished.

Now, plans have been unveiled for 25 new homes to be built on the site.

The Glencairn development is part of the council's £172m 'Building for the Future' programme, which will see 1150 new council homes across North Lanarkshire.

It is due to be completed in the autumn next year.

Councillor Sam Love, Convener of Housing and Social Work, said: "It's great to see this new development for the former site of Glencairn Tower get underway.

"There's been a lot of ground preparation work carried out and we continue to appreciate the patience of local residents while this building project continues.

"We're working closely with the contractor to ensure every effort is made to keep disruption to a minimum.

"I'm delighted with the progress we're making."

A sod cutting event took place to mark the beginning of the project.
