SCOTTISH Housing Minister Margaret Burgess has launched the first phase of a new housing development near Hampden Park.

Cruden Homes is building 55 affordable properties for sale at its King's View site in the south side.

The £6million development on a former brownfield site will feature one and two bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom terraced and semi-detached homes.

Work on the first phase of the project is expected to begin in May this year with the first of the 55 properties expected to be ready by spring next year.

Cruden, which was part of the consortium which built the Athletes' Village, is also working with Glasgow Housing Association and the city council to build 100 homes for rent in the area.

It plans to create opportunities for apprentices, training and employment for local people and work for local sub-contractors and suppliers.

Managing director John Gallacher said: "It is great for Cruden to be involved at ground level in the regeneration and transformation of North Toryglen.

"Our package of affordable quality private housing, combined with the job opportunities the development will create and our work with Glasgow Housing Association to deliver homes for rent will make a significant difference in the area by creating a re-invigorated economic environment which is ripe for public and private investment.

"That is great news for the local economy, Toryglen as a whole and for the city of Glasgow.

"We anticipate high demand for the first phase sales as to date, well over 400 people have already registered their interest."

Ms Burgess said the regeneration of North Toryglen would result in around 374 homes with 100 for social rent and the remainder for sale.

She added: "The Scottish Government has invested over £4.5million in the area which underlines our commitment to high quality housing and to transforming communities in Glasgow."

Properties in the first phase of King's View will cost between £75,000 and £160,000.
