T#hE Royal Conservatoire of Scotland has appointed three new senior staff members as the institution prepares to bolster its world-class training.

Former Evening Times deputy editor Janette Harkess has been appointed director of external relations.

Dr Gordon Munro has been appointed director of the School of Music and cellist David Watkin takes up the head of strings role.

Principal Jeffrey Sharkey, said: "This is a significant time at the conservatoire and the appointment of Janette, Gordon and David will take us forward in the next chapter in our history.

"They are dynamic, internationally experienced leaders, educators and performers and bring with them a wealth of knowledge. I am delighted they will be joining our senior team."

Ms Harkess said: "I'm really thrilled to be joining the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland at such an exciting and vibrant time for both the Conservatoire and for Scotland's creative sector.

"I look forward to being part of a team focused on ensuring that RCS continues to nurture the next generation of world-class creative talent and plays a key role in developing inspirational cultural leaders who impact positively on communities across Scotland and internationally."

Mr Munro said: "It's a great honour for me to be returning to my alma mater as director of music.

"The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is a remarkable place, energetic, dynamic and full of amazingly talented students and staff.

"I'm looking forward to learning alongside new students and to working with former and new colleagues, including our new Principal Jeff Sharkey, in this world class crucible of the performing arts."

Mr Watkins said: "I am absolutely delighted and honoured to be joining a world class team at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I am passionately committed to building a strong department and to developing a richly varied, integrated approach to help tomorrow's musicians prepare for a changing musical world."
