A city charity was beaming with pride as it unveiled its new van with the help of Glasgow Lord Provost Bob Winter.

The vehicle, christened Dignity, will help deliver household goods to needy families.

Volunteers from recycling charity Starter Packs cheered as the Lord Provost cut a ribbon in George Square to send Dignity on its way.

The charity was able to buy the van following an anonymous £25,000 donation.

It means Govan-based Starter Packs, which provides recycled household items to give people a fresh start in life, will be able to reach many more people.

Sarah Findlay, the charity's development manage, said: "This is one of the most important developments for us in 10 years.

"Having a second vehicle means we can reach so many more families.

"It also means we can get more donations in the door as well as we have greater capacity to collect items now."

Earlier this year Starter Packs was one of four charities to benefit from the Lord Provost's fundraising Burns Supper 2011.

The charity was awarded £17,50 towards its running costs.

Lord Provost Bob Winter, honorary patron of the charity, said: "It is a great honour to officially launch Starter Packs' new vehicle.

"They do tremendous work in giving support to families taking on new tenancies.

The charity was even given a further boost when West of Scotland Housing Association stepped in to cover the van's insurance costs.
