A DONATION of £50,000 has given the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice Brick by Brick Appeal a massive boost.

The money from Glasgow-based Matthew Algie will be used to fund the welcoming and hospitality areas in the new hospice, to be built on a site adjacent to Bellahouston Park.

It comes as the company celebrates its 150th anniversary, set up by Greenock-born Algie to sell tea that arrived on the Clyde clippers.

"We already support the hospice and supply it with coffee for the canteen at Carlton Place," said Matthew Algie managing director Gary Nicol. "It has been our local charity for a number of years.

"A number of people in the company have supported the hospice for a long time. We have a scheme where we match money staff raise, if they run a 10K, for example.

"We also support dinners and sporting events and some of the staff do payroll giving for the hospice as well."

The company employs about 235 people, 135 of them in its Gorbals base.

"We are very keen for the hospice to have a first class coffee offering for their patients and guests in their new premises, and to make it a welcoming experience for everyone," added Gary.
