A 15-year-old boy has died after he is believed to have jumped into a reservoir.

It is understood the teenager jumped into the water near Duntocher, Dunbartonshire, to cool off on one of the hottest days of the year.

A friend who was with him raised the alarm after seeing the youngster go underwater.

It is not clear if he hit his head before he disappeared under the water.

Officers were called to the area and a search and rescue operation was launched.

Three fire engines and one fire rescue boat were sent to the scene near Cochno Road.

RAF helicopters and a lifeboat were also rushed to the remote location but could not reach him in time.

The tragedy happened yesterday about 4.30pm. The 15-year-old's body was found and recovered from the water about two hours later.

Denis Agnew, provost of West Dunbartonshire Council, described the death as a "tragedy".

He added: "We are in the first week of our summer holidays and already a young person has died in a drowning incident.

"This is a real tragedy. There are no words to describe the loss of someone so young.

"Unfortunately, water has a terrible attraction for young people. They do not really think about the danger. We need to get the safety message across."

In June last year a 13-year-old boy drowned after jumping into the River Kelvin in Glasgow to rescue a friend.

Declan Shanley, of Summerston, was playing with friends on the banks of the river when one of the group fell into the water.

Declan and another friend jumped into the water to try and rescue their friend but Declan was swept away by the current.
