A luxury city centre spa hotel is in the running for an industry "Oscar".

The five-star Blythswood Square Hotel has been shortlisted for a gong less than a year after rapper Diddy became its first celebrity visitor. The hotel is in the running for the Best New Salon/Spa/Venue at the inaugural Scottish Health and Beauty Awards, to be announced at this year's Girls Day Out event at the SECC on Sunday.

The chic £3million spa has become a major Glasgow attraction following the opening of the £26m hotel, which used to be the city's iconic RAC Club. It has a swimming pool fitted with massage fountains and nine treatment rooms offering a range of therapies including a bath filled with Hebridean seaweed to detoxify the body.

Diddy, the American rapper, singer, record producer, actor and men's fashion designer, spent time relaxing in the spa shortly before headlining an MTV Crashes gig in the Old Fruitmarket last September.

Other celebs to check in to the luxury venue include telly stars John Barrowman, Lorraine Kelly and Anne Robinson.

Glasgow is looking good for a bucketful of gongs. Its hairdressers, beauticians, spas and treatment rooms are represented in 12 of the 13 categories listed in the Scottish Health & Beauty Awards – more than any other city.

The Best New Salon/Spa/Venue category also includes Glasgow's Dance HQ on Templeton Street.

Craig Andrew Hairdressing, in Jamaica Street, is competing for the title of Hairdressing Salon of the Year. The Movement Studio, Glasgow, is a contender for Health & Fitness Venue of the Year while the Stylist of the Year shortlist includes Sarah Graham-McCombe of Mak Hairdressing, Glassford Street, who is also competing for the title Colourist of the Year.

Glasgow's Tina Steenberg of the Tina Steenberg Boutique, Old Castle Road, is up for Therapist/Beautician of the Year.

The Cosmetic Consultant of the Year shortlist includes Catherine Knowles at Richardson Murray, Great Western Road, and Laura Borland at The Borland Studio, Woodside Place.

David McCusker of Ultimate Vibes, West Regent Street, is shortlisted for Health & Fitness Consultant/Trainer of the Year.

Shannon Burnett at Xquisite Hair Design, King's Park Road, is up against two others for Junior/Trainee of the Year while the store is nominated for the Customer Care Award.

The Fake Bake Hair & Beauty Boutique in West Regent Street is shortlisted for Beauty Salon of the Year and Best Salon Design while hairdresser Kevin O'Neil is up for Stylist of the Year and Colourist of the Year. His colleague Sharon Cameron is competing for Therapist/Beautician of the Year.

The awards were launched by top reservation site 5pm.co.uk and generated 35,000 online nominations, with the public voting for their favourite hairdresser, beautician and treatment room.
