Drink-drug cases swamp pioneering brain injury rehab unit

Three quarters of admissions to a new brain injury rehabilitation unit in Glasgow involve alcohol or drug misuse.

Alcohol-related violence, falls and other accidents had been responsible for 70% of acquired brain injury cases, with patients as young as 16 admitted to the centre.

Since October 2009, there have been 58 admissions to the unit in Springburn, which is the only one of its kind in Scotland that is funded by the NHS.
