Craig Whyte was today urged to complete his boardroom reshuffle at the earliest opportunity after a dramatic day at Ibrox which saw the Rangers hierarchy all but wiped out.

And John Macmillan, General Secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association, insists the new Rangers owner must act quickly to resolve the boardroom uncertainty at Ibrox.

"One has to assume that Craig Whyte has done what he has done with people ready in the background to fill these positions," Macmillan told SportTimes.

"If not, I don't know where the club goes from here. It is a bit concerning.

"You can't just suspend people like that and hope to operate as business as usual the next day. Someone will have to be in these positions quickly, and someone with experience.

"That is the worrying thing – who will these people be? Hopefully we will get things sorted out soon because the new season is only a few weeks away."

The departures of Johnstone – who had always intended to resign his position as chairman following Whyte's takeover – and his fellow board members is not seen as a major shock as the new owner attempts to stamp his authority on the club he supported as a boy.

An Independent Committee, comprising members of the previous board, had been set up to oversee the takeover process and had publicly criticised the Motherwell businessman.

And Macmillan added: "In a sense, what has happened isn't surprising. The Independent Committee were quite critical of him and questioned whether he had the wherewithal to take the club forward.

"I think it was inevitable that something like this was going to come. Craig Whyte made it clear he was going to operate with a smaller board and this appears to be his way of starting to do that.

"The fans will hope that he has made the right moves here, but only time will tell. The problem is that we are all in the dark as to why this has happened."

Joining Whyte in the boardroom will be Phill Betts and Gary Withey as the new owner sets out his blueprint for the future of the champions.

And Macmillan admits it is vital the Gers supremo appoints the right men for the key roles, with replacing chief executive Bain the main priority.

He said: "Martin Bain was the one who was dealing with players' contracts and such things and he was very close to the business side of the club. One has to assume, and I hope rightly, that Whyte has got someone lined up to take over what is a very important role."
