Two of Glasgow's most prestigious art collections have been awarded funding of more than £55,000.

Glasgow School of Art and the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University received the cash boosts from Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS).

The School of Art has been gifted £16,800 to restore two Charles Rennie Mackintosh wall clocks, while the Hunterian has been given £39,113 to reunite specimens, previously on loan to teaching hospitals, for the first time in 60 years.

Professor David Gaimster, director of the Hunterian, said the money would improve teaching and research work.

He said: "Hunterian founder Dr William Hunter was a prolific collector and his medical collections were central to the 1783 gift of his museum to the University of Glasgow.

"The MGS grant to the Hunterian allows the university to reunite these historical specimens with its main anatomical teaching collection, providing improved and much enhanced teaching and research access."

The pair of wall clocks in Glasgow School of Art are regarded among Rennie Mackintosh's most important works.

He combined his unique style with the latest technology at the time to create them.

Almost £650,000 is being invested into raising the standards of 16 of Scotland's museum collections in this round of Recognition and capital funding.

A total of £1m has been invested by the scheme this year into some of the most iconic collections.
