Two Glasgow Big Issue sellers have become part of The Fab Four to mark a special milestone.

Malky, who sells the magazine at Frasers and Joan, who is known as the 'singing vendor' and works from a pitch near Central Station in Union Street lined up with other sellers, Billie from London and Cardiff-based Shane, for the shot on the front cover of the 20th anniversary issue of the publication.

The image imitates the 1967 album, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club, album sleeve which features the lyrics, "It was 20 years ago today."

It also features people special to the history of the magazine from celebrities who have given exclusive interviews such as Susan Boyle and George Michael, to John Bird the founder and the late Body Shop founder Anita Roddick and Scottish husband Scot Gordon who funded it.

Malky, 41, who is originally from Pollok, said: "I was a wee bit emotional when I saw it. I feel very good about it.

"When my customers bought it ,I said to them 'that's me'."

Former drug user Malky has been homeless for two years, but is now clean.

He also had a starring role in the, Photographers For Hope exhibition of photographs of Big Issue vendors earlier this year.

It was organised by American photographer David Burnett, who has photographed every US President since JFK.

He also got city vendors behind the camera, taking images of the places they slept for an exhibition during the International Network of Street Papers conference in Glasgow.

The London edition of the Big Issue came first with the Scottish edition following in 1993 and there are now editions all over the world, from South Africa, to Japan, South Korea to Malawi.

The latest is in Nigeria.

Editor of The Big Issue, Paul McNamee, said: "Our 20th anniversary edition is such a key magazine we needed an iconic image to match that, and who better to call on than The Beatles?

"It allowed us to pay tribute to the many people who have been part of The Big Issue story over the last 20 years.

"Scottish, and particularly Glaswegian vendors, always sell brilliantly.

"They are committed and they see the benefits that selling The Big Issue can bring them. Vendors are the reason we do what we do. They are our Beatles."
