A man was dragged along by a train after being punched and falling onto the railway track.

The 32-year-old suffered serious injuries and is being treated in hospital

The man, who was with his wife, was attacked after getting off a train from Edinburgh at Coatbridge Sunnyside station in North Lanarkshire.

A man on the platform punched him, causing him to fall into the gap between the train and the platform.

He landed beneath the train and was dragged for a short distance before the alarm was raised.

The man suffered back and leg injuries.

British Transport Police (BTP) have appealed for witnesses to the incident, which happened at around 11.45pm on Saturday.

Detective Sergeant Kevin McCormack said: "I am anxious to trace anyone who can identify the men involved."

The incident happened after the 10.51pm Edinburgh Waverley to Garscadden service had arrived at the station.

The victim's attacker is known to have boarded the train at Edinburgh Waverley and was described as wearing a 'beanie' hat.

He is thought to have been travelling with another, taller, man described as wearing a black jacket.

They were last seen crossing the station car park and walking off in the direction of Sunnyside Road, Coatbridge.

Officers have been reviewing CCTV footage in an attempt to identify those involved.
